Smart lock security is layered. The physical layer carries the same cylinder concerns plus anti-pry, anti-tamper and motor strength. The electronic layer adds encrypted communication, on-device authorisation, and resistance to relay and replay attacks. The operational layer is where the real difference lives: you know who opened which door when, and you can revoke access without a locksmith.
"Is a smart lock more secure?" does not have a clean yes-or-no answer. A premium traditional lock on a strong door is excellent physical security. Convenience and key management
This is where smart locks pull ahead. The metal key is a 4,000-year-old idea, and its drawbacks have not changed. Keys get lost, copied, and loaned to the neighbour. Handing them out and getting them back is manual and error-prone. And once a key is out there, there is no record of who used it and when.
A smart lock swaps the metal key for a credential you control from software — fingerprint, passcode, card or phone app. Access is issued in seconds, scheduled to expire, and every entry shows up in an audit trail. Cost
A traditional lock is low upfront and low and predictable over its life. A quality deadbolt and cylinder is a one-time purchase that lasts decades with the occasional drop of lubricant. The premium pays off when the access-control features are actually in use: rentals, audits, remote management. On a door that never needs any of that, the extra spend is wasted.
Maintenance and failure modes
Traditional locks fail in familiar ways — a worn pin, a broken spring, a frozen cylinder. Diagnosis is mechanical, any locksmith can fix it, and the failure is local and obvious. Smart locks add electronic and software failure modes on top. Dead batteries, the most common one, are cushioned by low-battery alerts, external jump-power and a mechanical override key. A lost link to the gateway should never lock users out, because the lock still works locally with its enrolled credentials. Firmware or motor faults are rarer, and they fall to the vendor rather than a locksmith.
The engineering principle to look for is graceful degradation: a good smart lock keeps letting enrolled users in when the network is down, and falls back to a mechanical override when the electronics fail entirely. A lock that bricks itself because the battery is flat or the cloud is unreachable is badly designed.

Where each one fits
A traditional deadbolt still fits a single-occupant home or a private room with no turnover. The same goes for doors where reliability has to be absolute and battery or network dependence is unacceptable — a remote cabin, an unmonitored outbuilding. And it fits high-security safes and cabinets, where simplicity and physical attack-resistance matter more than an audit log.
