A modern smart lock can verify a fingerprint or passcode on its own, with no internet involved. The lock only needs a path to the internet once you want to unlock it from across town, get an alert when it opens, or send a temporary code to a guest while you are away. That path is a smart lock gateway, also called a hub or bridge.
What a gateway does
Most battery-powered smart locks talk to phones over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). BLE is miserly with power and needs no home network, but it only reaches about 10 metres. A gateway is a small, always-on device that sits within BLE range of the lock and connects to your building's Wi-Fi or wired network instead. It relays messages between the lock and the cloud, so a command issued from anywhere reaches the lock, and events from the lock reach you.
It is best thought of as a translator between a short-range radio and the wider internet. It does not authorise unlocks itself, since that still happens on the lock. It just carries the conversation.
What changes once one is fitted
Adding a gateway turns a standalone lock into a managed one. You can open the door from the app while you are out, for a delivery or a guest who arrived early. You get a push notification the instant a door opens, a lock is forced, or a battery runs low. Every event lands in a cloud log you can pull up later for audit, reporting or a dispute.
It works in the other direction too. You can generate a time-limited passcode for a cleaner or a guest without standing next to the door, and push schedule or credential updates to dozens of locks in one go. None of this changes how the lock verifies a credential locally. The gateway just layers reach and visibility on top of a door that already makes its own decisions.
When a gateway makes sense
Distance and door count are the two reasons to add one. A single gateway can serve several BLE locks within range, which keeps per-door cost low, and this is why hotels and short-term-rental operators lean on the BLE-plus-gateway model. Off-site management is the other case: if you look after a property you do not stand next to — a rental, a branch office, a family member's home — remote access is the whole point. Businesses that need a defensible record of who came and went, or instant tamper alerts, also rely on the cloud link a gateway provides.
The opposite case is a single door you walk up to every day. Your phone already speaks BLE to the lock, so you can unlock, issue codes and read recent history from the app while you are on site. If you never manage the door from more than a few metres away, skip the gateway and add one later if your needs change.
Where to put it
Because the gateway bridges two radios, placement matters. Stay within BLE range of the lock — walls and metal doors shrink the ~10 m range, so aim for the same room where possible. Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: BLE shares the 2.4 GHz band and gateways are tuned for it, while 5 GHz is not supported on most units. Keep it powered, since a gateway is always-on — pick a spot with a reliable mains outlet, as most are not battery-powered. In a large building, plan one gateway per cluster of doors rather than expecting a single unit to cover a whole floor.
Gateway or built-in Wi-Fi
You can also buy a lock with Wi-Fi built in and skip the gateway entirely. A BLE lock plus a gateway runs for months on a set of batteries, while a Wi-Fi lock typically lasts weeks, because the radio is thirstier. Both give you remote access, but only the gateway model lets one piece of hardware serve many doors, which is why hospitality leans that way. For a single home door, native Wi-Fi is perfectly sensible. For anything with multiple doors, the BLE-plus-gateway model keeps batteries alive and costs down — and a dead battery is the single most common support ticket, so that matters more than it sounds. A gateway does not make a lock more secure on its own. Security still comes from the lock's local authorisation. What you gain is reach: remote control, real-time alerts, cloud history, and codes you can issue from anywhere. If you manage doors from a distance or run several of them, plan on using one. If you walk up to your one door every day, you can skip it and add it later.
