"Keyless entry" means opening a door without a physical metal key. Instead of cutting a piece of brass, you prove who you are with a passcode, a card, your phone, or your fingerprint. The idea moved from cars and offices into homes, hotels and short-term rentals, and it is now the default way most property owners manage access.

Four ways in

In practice you meet four credential types, and good hardware often supports several on the same lock. A passcode is typed on a keypad; it can be permanent, time-limited (a guest code that expires at checkout), or one-time. A card or fob (RFID) is tapped — fast, cheap to issue and replace, and ideal for staff who manage many doors. A phone unlocks over an app, often hands-free as you approach, and holds an encrypted digital key that can be revoked instantly if the phone is lost. And a fingerprint is matched by a sensor against an encrypted template on the lock, so there is nothing to carry and nothing to forget. Why people switch

The metal key has not changed in 200 years, and it still has the same problems. A forgotten passcode or a lost card costs two minutes to reset — no locksmith, no re-keying every door. Access becomes granular: you decide exactly who can enter, when, and for how long, so a cleaner gets a code that works Tuesday 9-11 only. Every unlock is logged — who, when, how — which is essential for businesses and handy for "did the kids get home?" questions. And revocation is instant: a checked-out guest or a former employee loses access the second you withdraw it, with no brass key to chase down.

Is it actually secure?

The first question most people ask is whether it is secure. A well-made keyless lock is more secure than a traditional pin-and-tumbler key lock, not less. Credentials are encrypted: a copied passcode is useless once you rotate it, a card's identifier is read over an encrypted channel, and a fingerprint is stored as a one-way template that cannot be turned back into an image. There is no keyway to pick or bump, which closes off an entire class of attacks that defeat traditional locks. And anything that goes wrong is revocable and trackable: you reissue in seconds and read what happened from the log.

The real risks are human — weak passcodes (use six or more digits, never 1234) and shared codes you forget to revoke. Good hardware and good habits handle the rest.

If you are replacing a door

For a single door, pick the credential you will actually use day to day — for most homes that means fingerprint plus a passcode as backup, with a mechanical key or emergency port kept as a last resort.
